In these challenging and rapidly changing times we can no longer
avoid the knowledge that the body of the Great Mother, the earth,
is responding to the long years of neglect and abuse to which humanity
has subjected her. The pace of life is growing ever faster and many
of us are caught in the trap of consumerism. Many of us are basically
unhappy or unfulfilled.
What is it that makes us really feel fulfilled?
What might make us happier? More things? More money? Better relationships?
Her in the west we have lost much of our spiritual
heritage and the deep inner knowing that there is something else,
that inner sense of security and well being – and so much
more.
All true spiritual streams have recognised the
sacredness of the earth and all of creation; among these have
been the druids and the early Celtic Christians – the Ceile
De or Companions of God. Many of these early Christian Monks were
druids who were aware of the coming of the Sun God with His message
of Love for all beings.
This message was not new to everyone, the teachings
of the Druid initiates was very similar to the teachings of the
new impulse that came to the east. It was later taught by the
followers of the St. John stream of Christianity which included
some of the early Irish and Scottish celtic monks; the Cathars
of the Occitane in Southern France and the Templars in Europe.
The teaching of Buddha also contains this message
of love and compassion for all beings as did the teaching and
practice of St. Francis of Assisi who is remembered for his humility
and love for all of nature.
At
this critical hour in the story of the earth we need to find a
way to remember our true place in the creation; we need to remember
who we really are and what we need to do before we destroy our
beautiful earthly home – or before the earth, in her efforts
to cleanse herself, destroys us.
